ADVOCACY UPDATE

The 135th General Assembly is now in session and we will continue to report on any bills that pertain to our members or the important work they do.

On May 3, we will be hosting our second in-person Advocacy Day at the Statehouse. The event will consist of a breakfast with legislators and staff, followed by meetings to discuss any bills of interest to our members. What types of bills do we follow? Check out our Advocacy Policy.

We hope those discussions will involve the Pet-Friendly Housing Bill being drafted by the Cleveland Animal Protective League that will incentivize landlords to offer pet-friendly rentals. We will keep you updated on the progress of that effort.

Member Benefit: If members would like to receive legislative updates as they happen, please email ohiofedhs@gmail.com and ask to be added to the list for advocacy alerts.

It includes laws and case law believed will be of most use to investigators.

Price is $30 for Ohio Fed members, $45 for non-members and includes shipping and handling.

Member Benefit:

Besides the discounted price for the print version, Ohio Fed members can still access a free, online version of this handbook by clicking here (login required).

OTHER RESOURCES OF INTEREST

NOW AVAILABLE: UPDATED ASV GUIDELINES FOR STANDARDS OF CARE IN ANIMAL SHELTERS

The Association of Shelter Veterinarians' Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters were originally created in 2010 to serve as a pivotal resource for the care of shelter animals in the U.S. and around the world. The second edition of the Guidelines, published in December 2022, incorporates advances in shelter medicine knowledge and expands on the previous document with two new sections. Additionally, the second edition shifts its framework from the Five Freedoms to the Five Domains, which provides a broader approach to achieving and maintaining positive welfare for shelter animals.

Like the original, the Second Edition is written for all personnel caring for shelter animals in a variety of settings, including foster-based organizations, nonprofit humane societies and SPCAs, municipal animal services facilities, and sanctuaries. The Guidelines are also applicable for any other organization that routinely cares for populations of companion animals.
